African students throng Punjab's private varsity

A private university here has seen a surge in the number of foreign pupils,
especially from African countries like Nigeria, Tanzania and Congo who
make up nearly one-fifth of its international students.
Currently, over 250 students from nearly 16 countries are studying at Lovely Professional
University (LPU) - the region's first private varsity. Of them, around 50 are from African
countries.
"The response from international students is exceptional. The number of foreign
applicants has increased during the last couple of years. We owe it to our cosmopolitan
approach and world class standards of curriculum and faculty," LPU deputy director
Aman Mittal told IANS.
"Africa has emerged as a good source of students. For the first time, students from
South Korea and Indonesia have come for studies in this part of the country. We
consider our university as the next Takshila in making where students from across the
globe come to study under one roof," he added.
Mittal said the LPU takes care of all requirements of foreign students in terms of food,
accommodation and even social interaction with local students.African students are very
happy with the facilities in the campus and the hospitality of the locals.
"Coming to Punjab for studies is so far the best decision of my academic career. If I
compare the infrastructure and other facilities provided to us with those in my country,
this place is far better," said Adora Hope, a Nigerian student who is doing engineering in
computer science at the university.
"Here we have so much freedom to pitch our ideas and resources in the campus," Hope
added.
Allison Clifford, another Nigerian who is doing engineering in information technology, told
IANS: "India is one of the fastest growing economies and I came here in search of better
opportunities."
"I will also try to work in India for some years before returning to Nigeria. All leading
software companies have their offices here and it will be the best learning ground,"
Clifford said.
Students from different African countries like Nigeria (25), Sudan (15), Congo (3), Kenya
(3) and Tanzania (3) are studying at the LPU.
The campus is spread over 600 acres here and around 25,000 students are studying in
this wi-fi enabled campus."I always wanted to come to India for a fashion designing
course. I particularly chose Punjab because the fashion industry here is emerging very
fast, providing a plethora of opportunities," said Nabila Karim Bhanji from Tanzania, who
is doing bachelors in fashion technology.
"After completing my course, I would like to return to Tanzania and start my own
business. Every day, I get many queries from my friends in Tanzania, who also want to
come to Punjab to pursue different courses. They will apply for admissions in the next
session."
The Lovely group ventured into the education business in 2001, offering BBA, BCA, MBA
and MCA courses. In 2003, they started working in the direction of establishing a
university and in 2005 they finally got approval from the Punjab government.
"I had seen an LPU advertisement on some TV channel and I applied for the admission.
The education system is very different and here more emphasis is on practical subjects.
The fee is also quite affordable if we compare it with the US or the UK," Asad Ahmed
Mostafa, an engineering student from Sudan, told IANS.
"The weather is very good and I am also enjoying Indian food, especially butter chicken.
People are very warm and these days I am also learning the Punjabi language from friends!" stated Mostafa.

Bangalore University flunks test

Students of Bangalore University’s Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) who have English as one of the subjects will get a unique choice when they appear for their first term examination in November.

For, unlike the normal exam where the students are given a question, they will be given the option to select from two question papers!

The students will be given two sets of term papers of different syllabi - new and old, and will be asked to pick either to answer in the examination commencing November 9.
The unusual state of affairs is a result of total mess and lack of co-ordination among the various bodies of the Bangalore University.

The seeds of the muddle were sown when BU decided to bring BHM under BA/BSc/BCom board of studies. It was decided to prescribe the same English textbook for BHM, that was chosen for BCom. The Board of Studies (BOS) and Board of Examination communicated the decision to BU academic section. However, only a few colleges received the communication. Those who received the communication followed the new syllabus, while the others followed the old.

Confusion prevailed as the erstwhile BHM board and English BoS differed over the syllabus. Things came to a head when a few lecturers demanded that the BU clarify its stand on the syllabus. In a fix, the university decided to allow students to have the option on the question paper. “We took a decision to allow the students, irrespective whether they are repeaters or freshers, to choose a question paper of their choice. it will will be communicated to BU,” BOE chairman Narasimha Reddy said.

Curriculum change

In May 2010, the university revised all language subjects for 2010-11. But, the BU publications division delayed printing of the books and the new texts were available only two months into the semester.

The textbooks were sold out in a couple of days, as the publications division published just over 5,000 copies for more than 90,000 first semester students.

Postponement sought

Several teachers have urged the BU to postpone the exam at least by a week. According to the BU notification issued much earlier, the odd semester begins from July 15 and concludes on November 2 with 90 working days spread over three-and-half months excluding Sundays and national holidays.

Seven days were lost as colleges remained closed for some reason or the other. Portions could not be finished as the new textbooks were not available. University registrar R M Ranganath told Deccan Herald the BU “will look into the matter.”

BU will outfox exam cheats with numbers

In another step to prevent irregularities in exams, Bangalore University (BU) will ensure that evaluators will not get to see the registration number of students on answersheets. Instead, they will see a dummy number, which would be unknown to the student.

Here’s how it will work.

Starting November 9, students will be asked to write their registration number at a designated place on the page one of the answersheet. After the exam is over, the sheets will be sent to designated centres where they will be scanned.

After scanning, a computer will generate and allot a dummy number for each answerscript. A custodian would then tear and keep the first page aside while sending the rest, with the dummy number, to examiners.

Post-evaluation, the marks and dummy number would be fed to the computer, which will match it with the corresponding student.

The university has warned students against writing the registration number in any part of the answerscript. The BU rule says, “If a student scribbles the registration number in any other place, it would be considered as malpractice. The student risks being debarred.”

Prof M Siddanand, who is part of a committee whose members are visiting colleges to explain the new system, said, “The university has introduced this process to prevent examiners from identifying the candidate or college the answerscript belongs to.”

Authorities are introducing this step after coming across cases of examiners and custodians getting in touch with students using the registration number.

Biometrics for examiners
In another first, examiners have been asked to swipe their thumb at the exam centre twice a day (at entry and exit). Sources said this rule was introduced following reports that some examiners were either not reporting to duty or not performing as required.

They have also been asked to produce two photographs so that identity cards can be issued. BU sources said, “We were forced to introduce this step after coming across instances of fake teachers evaluating answerscripts.”

Bangalore University Bundles All Its Foreign Students Into A Single Exam Hall

Bangalore:
Nearly 1,500 foreign students in various colleges and courses across the city are troubled by just one question: Why? A question triggered by Bangalore University which has decreed that henceforth, all of them will write their examinations at one centre.
In a circular dated October 19, a copy of which is with STOI, BU directed colleges to instruct foreign students to report to Kristu Jayanti College for their exams as per the time-table. While the affected students were apprehensive to even speak to mediapersons about it, college principals were incensed, more so because the university gave no reason. But R M Ranganath, registrar (administration), says it was done to provide them with a “good centre”.
THE CIRCULAR
“Contact the principal of Kristu Jayanti College in person and submit the list of foreign students of I, III and V semesters of both freshers and repeaters to the exam centre on or before October 25. Also provide cooperation, coordination and assistance as required by the institutions where the exam is held,” states the circular signed by T R Subramanya, registrar (evaluation) of BU.
The circular further states that under no circumstance should foreign students be put to any inconvenience, and that, “If any foreign students takes the exam other than in Kristu Jayanti College, his/her result will not be declared.”
The university has asked colleges to rewrite the address of the exam centre as Kristu Jayanti College in the admission ticket of foreign students and issue them after an attestation by respective principals. Also, a list of foreign students who have paid the exam fee, course details and subject details semester-wise need to be submitted to the principal of Kristu Jayanti on or before October 25 to enable the college to make necessary arrangements to conduct the examination.
However, practical exams will be conducted in respective colleges.
PRINCIPALS CRY FOUL
Principals have termed the circular a “preposterous move” and “bound to add confusion to the muddle”. They have written to the vice-chancellor that there is no reason why foreign nationals should travel to only one centre to write the exam. “What wrong have they or their institutions done?” principals asked. They added that most foreign students, unfamiliar with the city and not knowing the language, stay in hostels, rooms and as paying guests close to the colleges. Asking them to travel to a new exam centre is subject to harassment and places them at a disadvantage. “They may lose their way and not reach the centre in time. We need to treat all students equally,” a principal of a first grade college, who didn’t want to be named, told STOI.
Another upset principal said, “Most students stay near their college. We can arrange transport for one day but how can we arrange every day? Moreover, officials are not giving any reason for this decision.”
Principals feel this move will result in confusion over register numbers. “It’s unjust to discriminate on the basis of nationality. This move will bring disrepute not only to BU but to the country as well,” they said.
WHAT BU HAS TO SAY
“We have about 1,500 students from over 10 countries. We want to provide them with a good college as an exam centre. We’ve started with Kristu Jayanti College; next time it’ll be another college and it will change on rotational basis. The main parameters for selection is ambience and infrastructure. We’ve taken into consideration representation from college principals and discussed the distance factor too. We’ll see how it works for students and based on feedback, we’ll decide later,” said R M Ranganath, registrar (administration), BU.

Breaking News..................

India Plane Overshoots Runway: 158 Dead

A passenger plane has overshot a runway, crashed into a forest and burst into flames in southwest India, killing 158 people. Skip related content
The Air India jet carrying 160 passengers - including 19 children and four babies - and six crew members slid off the runway during heavy rain at Mangalore Airport at around 6.30am local time.
Officials said eight people survived and dismissed earlier reports that one of the survivors had died on the way to hospital.
Flames were seen blazing from the wreckage as firefighters fought to bring the inferno under control.
Two rescue workers were seen running up a hill carrying a young girl covered in foam. She was later treated for severe burns in hospital.
Other rescuers pulled out scores of burned bodies from the blackened tangle of aircraft cables, twisted metal and charred trees at the crash site.
Many of the dead were still strapped into their seats, their bodies charred beyond recognition.
Relatives of the victims, who had come to the airport to meet them, were seen weeping near the wreckage.
"The plane shook with vibrations and split into two," a survivor called Pradeep told CNN-IBN television.
He said the plane's initial touchdown appeared smooth at first, but then a small fire developed and an explosion set off a bigger blaze.
The technician added that he managed to jump from the plane and was helped by villagers who had rushed to the scene to help search for survivors.
Witnesses said the plane touched down on the runway correctly but did not stop on the wet tarmac and slid over the edge of a cliff at the end of the landing strip.
Sky's Asia correspondent Alex Crawford says Mangalore Airport is in a hilly area and is considered one of the most difficult airports to navigate.
It has a "tabletop" runway, which ends in a valley, making a crash inevitable if a plane overshoots it.
Crawford adds: "Precision flying here is essential, there's no room for error."
The state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 was piloted by a 55-year-old British citizen of Serbian origin who is considered highly experienced and has landed on the runway before.
The airport said it did not receive a distress call from the pilot as the budget airline aircraft flew in to land.
There are suggestions a tyre burst upon landing, and poor weather conditions may have contributed to the incident.
The crash is believed to be the worst in India since the November 1996 mid-air collision between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane near New Delhi that killed 349 people.
India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed his condolences and promised compensation for the families of the victims.
Boeing said it is sending a team to provide technical aid to the government's crash investigation.
The UK Foreign Office said there are no reports at this stage of British citizens on board.
An emergency information service has been set up for concerned relatives to call on 001 2565 6196 or 001 2560 3101.

THE DAY MESSI DEMOLISH THE MIGHTY GUNNERS..............

Our Country Ambitious Plan...........

In a bid to produce more hydro-power, the Government will build a new hydro-power generating unit at River Malagarasi in Kigoma region with a capacity of producing 8MW.
Plans are also underway to do major rehabilitation of electric infrastructure in six regions, thanks to financing from a number of donors.
This was revealed by Energy and Minerals minister, Mr William Ngeleja when he spoke to reporters at his office yesterday. He said electric projects will be funded by the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), African Development Bank (AfDB) and Rural Energy Agency (REA).
The Minister said the tenders for the set project will be floated in June this year.
According to Mr Ngeleja, MCC had offered a total of $206.47 million (Sh320.411 million). Out of the amount,
$53.68 will be used for construction of the hydro-power generating unit at Malagarasi and a service line to Kigoma/Ujiji, Uvinza and Kasulu.
He said another $89.666 will be used to improve power infrastructures in Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro, Iringa, Mbeya and Mwanza regions.
Minister Ngeleja said the African Development Bank has committed to fund a construction of 932km 33KV and 11KV transmission lines in Mwanza and Shinyanga respectively.
"The contract between AfDB and the government was signed in March this year and we are waiting for a go ahead from AfDB for the project to commence," Mr Ngeleja said.
On the REA contribution, he noted that a total of Sh4.221billion had been set aside by the government to extend power to Longido and improve distribution network in Bagamoyo district.
Meanwhile, Mr Ngeleja allayed fears over the country resolve to start generating power from uranium by 2012.
"We will involve all stakeholders public, private and the international, to ensure that power from uranium is produced safely... we will develop capacity to manage waste from uranium," he said.
"We are not intending at producing weapons of mass destruction, rather we are aiming at power production, so they (international community) should not worry," added Ngeleja.

TASABA GRADUATION 17TH APRIL 2010

WHY WE APOLOGIZE...............

Apology means admission of guilt which is going together with
the request for forgiveness and an expression of regret.
When you admit your mistakes, other people you come across are
more able to do the same. You act as a role model and an encourager.
We are all humans who reside on the planet of mistakes and apologies
are absolutely necessity to bring balance in our lives.
By apologizing you begin to fix the problem created and the healing
process begins.
If someone hurts you, it is justice to have them apologize to you!!.
For that reason, we have to do the same when we hurt others.
Apologizing produces guilt to other people but for the better. They see
you apologize for your mistake and compare it to their contribution of
the problem they made.

ALTENATIVE WAYS OF APOLOGIZING

1)Writing
a)Describe the problem.
b)Describe the reason for the behaviour.
c)Describe the reason for changing behaviour.

2)Choose someone to do it for you.
Potentially problems.
a)You don't have the control over what the person will say.
b)It has the less impact.

3)Gift.
If the person you hurt doesn't want to talk to you, give a time to allow healing.

MISTAKES IN APOLOGIZING.

For example (1)"I apologize if I hurt anyone!".
(2)"Please take my apology if you were
offended by what I said".
This is what we call 'non-apology apology'. Most common with politicians
and public speakers. If you are not sure whether somebody was offended or not,
it is much better not to apologize at all otherwise you have to apologize
while being honest with your self.

You are responsible for your emotional healing...

TANGAZO

A.M.R Mwamanenge kutoka ofisi za ubalozi wa Tanzania New delhi- India aliwasili jijini Bangalore.

AB329755waliokuwa wanakaa No.1093/1.11th Cross,Swarnanagar,Robertsonpet,KGF-563 122.

Nilizidi kupigania haki lakini walinijibu “This is India not Tanzania and we have to coup with them like or not” niliwauliza kama huo ndio utamaduni wao wa kumwagia watu petrol na kuchoma moto kutaka kuwaua?

Fidelis Msomekela
